The University of Wyoming seeks a Dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Science.

The Position

The Dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Science is the College’s chief academic officer, reporting to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.  The Dean provides vision and leadership in academic, intellectual, research, administrative, personnel, outreach, and development activities.  The Dean currently oversees 107 tenured and non-tenured faculty, 7 departments, and a senior leadership team with 2 Associate Deans and additional support staff.  The College is supported by 1 development officer.  There are 1760 undergraduate and 250 graduate students pursuing degrees through the College.

The successful candidate for this position will enjoy a uniquely influential role in higher education in the State of Wyoming as Dean of a team of leading researchers and educators developing a College of national prominence.  The goals of this “Engineering Initiative” are 1) excellence in undergraduate education, 2) world-class research and graduate education, 3) economic development focused on the university’s land-grant mission, and 4) support of K-14 STEM education.  (For more information of this initiative, see The University has a very strong endowment of about $630 million, and a commitment to significantly grow this to propel the college of engineering and other priority areas to lay the foundation for growth of the state economy.


  • Set agendas and promote high academic standards in instruction and research;
  • Promote, recruit, support and develop outstanding and diverse faculty, staff, and student body;
  • Oversee the curricula of the College;
  • Facilitate the review and approval process for establishing new undergraduate and graduate    degree programs and for overseeing the curricular planning and development within the College;
  • Lead and organize working with accrediting bodies such as ABET;
  • Support recruitment efforts of the College and ensure the excellence of student advising during their education and oversee student success services;
  • Cultivate partnerships with other University colleges in the development of interdisciplinary academic and research programs;
  • Promote development of industry and economic health and diversification through the programs of the College;
  • Forge partnerships with state, national, and international institutions of higher education to enhance education, research, and economic development programs for our faculty, staff, and students, and for the state of Wyoming;
  • Create opportunities of mutual benefit among students, faculty, community, and industry leaders;
  • Identify the College’s needs for faculty positions, establish hiring priorities, and make recommendations to the hiring authority;
  • Administer academic personnel policy, including recommending, and, when delegated, approving appointments, promotion, and termination of academic personnel;
  • Authorize the initiation of faculty recruitments; negotiate and approve faculty start-up packages;
  • Support and assist the scholarly development of faculty, particularly junior faculty;
  • Foster nationally leading research programs that generate strong external funding revenues from research agencies and through corporate partnerships, with impact in Wyoming;
  • Provide oversight for the financial affairs of the College, including budget development and allocation;
  • Guide short and long-range planning of capital improvement projects;
  • Cultivate local, national, and global relations and sources of support, working closely with the development officers to cultivate major gifts and to promote the image of the College;
  • Enhance, promote, and develop alumni networks;
  • Participate as a member of the Dean’s Council and the Academic Forum of Academic Affairs;
  • Work with campus administration, the Academic Senate, and other campus offices on the implementation and development of campus-wide decisions and policy development and strategic directions;
  • Oversee all operations of the College and provide direction to College employees.

Minimum Qualifications

  • An earned doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited institution in one of the disciplines of the College, or in a closely related field;
  • A distinguished record of teaching, scholarship, and leadership that warrants a tenured faculty appointment at the rank of Full Professor;
  • A demonstrated record of competitive federal funding from appropriate research agencies, such as NSF, DOE, NIH or other relevant agencies, and/or from private foundations supporting research, including foundations such as Gates, Moore, Sloan, or other similar entities.
  • Demonstrated successful administrative leadership experience in higher education as a dean, associate dean, department chair, center or institute leader, or comparable position with responsibilities that includes curriculum oversight, superior student degree progress, budget development and management, strategic planning, personnel management, performance reviews, as well as hiring, promotion, and tenure decisions.


Preferred Qualifications


  • Demonstrated understanding of national trends in research, education, and best practices in engineering and applied science, as shown by participation in or leadership of national advisory committees of relevant federal research agencies, national or international laboratories, and/or university research institutes, review committees of federal research and/or university research programs, participation in national academy reports and/or reports informing research agency priorities, etc.
  • National and/or international recognition for the candidate’s record of scholarship, such as being named fellow of relevant societies, national awards, elected leadership positions in national organizations, etc.
  • Proven record of accomplishment in developing and maintaining relationships with donors to support development of major initiatives, and engaging with alumni to develop new funding networks.
  • Exhibited understanding and commitment to the principles of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in an academic environment.
  • A commitment to shared governance, transparency in management, and data-driven decision making.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of demonstrated success in leadership and administration of complex and interdisciplinary academic units of relevant size and structure, and management of diverse groups of faculty, staff, and students.
  • Experience in faculty development and a proven record for recruiting, supporting and retaining a diverse faculty and staff.
  • Demonstrated ability in developing relationships with industry and institutions that promote partnerships and funding for the College.
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills, listening skill, and excellent interpersonal skills.
  • A record of successfully managing large, complex budgets and existing financial resources, generating new sources of revenue, and aligning priorities with resources.
  • A track record of successfully leading and managing changing and establishing buy-in by stakeholders and supporters of the College, including state government officials.
  • A sincere commitment to holding a leadership position at a rural, land-grant university and engaging with local and state communities, and a commitment to public education.
  • Professional Engineering (PE) licensure, or equivalencies.

The College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS) was established to help fulfill the University of Wyoming’s core land-grant mission: to serve Wyoming through outstanding undergraduate education, research in areas of economic importance to the state, and outreach to stakeholders across the state.
