UofM College of Education Names New Dean

The University of Memphis College of Education named higher education veteran Michael T. Miller as its new dean today.

With a career in higher education spanning nearly four decades, Miller comes to the UofM  from the University of Arkansas, where he is the David and Jane Gearhart Endowed Faculty Fellow. He most recently served as Dean of the College of Education and Health Professions at the University of Arkansas.

Prior to the University of Arkansas, Miller held leadership roles at Southern Illinois University, the University of Nebraska, the University of Alabama and San Jose State University.

He earned his bachelor's degree in political science and his master's degree in higher education, both from Southern Illinois, and received his doctoral degree in postsecondary education from Nebraska.

“I am thrilled to be joining the College of Education at the University of Memphis," said Miller. "The College has an incredible legacy of serving the students of the University and the Memphis community. I’ve had relationships with faculty in the College for the past 35 years and have witnessed their commitment to the students and the community, which I truly appreciate. I feel incredibly fortunate and grateful for this opportunity.”

His scholarly research includes a focus on educational outcomes related to access to postsecondary education and community colleges. An author of two books, Miller has been on 150 doctoral dissertation committees and is an editorial reviewer for several peer-reviewed journals.

“Michael comes to the University of Memphis at a pivotal time in the field of education,” said Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs & Provost David Russomanno. “I am confident that his commitment to research and dedication to faculty and program development will be the distinction makers for the College of Education, which is already leading the way through transformative innovation and engagement opportunities.”

Miller will assume his new role on July 1.
