Jonathan Palumbo is the sole finalist for athletics director at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. He was chosen from a pool of more than 80 applicants and has a broad range of experience and success in NCAA Division I athletics.

“We are fortunate to have someone with Jon’s experience and enthusiasm joining Islander Athletics,” said Dr. Kelly M. Quintanilla, President and CEO of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. “He has a solid track record in compliance, fundraising, facilities, sports management, and business that will lead us to the next level of becoming a mid-major breakthrough athletics program.”

Palumbo currently serves as Deputy Director of Athletics at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) where he supervises the day-to-day operations of the athletics department, including budget and business operations, human resources, facilities and event operations, compliance, sports medicine, and strength and conditioning.

With an eye toward growth, he was instrumental in the development and implementation of the department’s most recent five-year strategic plan. He implemented budget management procedures that resulted in surpluses for the past five years which have been reinvested in athletics capital projects. He also helped negotiate a lucrative 10-year multimedia contract with Learfield Sports that guarantees VCU at least $20 million in revenue. In addition, he was involved in every stage of construction of a $25 million, 60,000 square foot basketball practice facility in 2015.

Prior to VCU, he served as Associate Athletic Director for Business at the University of Maryland. His experience also includes stints at American University, The College of William and Mary, and La Salle University.

“Islander Athletics is poised for great things, and I am humbled and excited to have the opportunity to join such a dedicated group of people,” Palumbo said. “I am impressed with the support for the campus and its athletics program. I look forward to working with Dr. Quintanilla and the entire community to build on the current foundation and to provide our student-athletes every opportunity for success in the classroom, in competition, and in life after graduation.”

Palumbo’s appointment is pending approval from the Texas A&M University System Board of Regents.
