The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) is seeking nominations and applications for the position of Vice Chancellor of Communications and Marketing (VCOCM). This is an exciting time for the University and the Office of Communications and Marketing (OCM), and a dynamic leader will have the opportunity to make an immediate impact.
The University seeks an experienced, entrepreneurial and energetic leader to work in partnership with Chancellor Steven Angle, a team of academic and administrative leaders and the existing OCM staff to develop a more aggressive, productive and integrated communication and marketing platform. Under the current administration, UTC has assembled a vibrant leadership core as well as an expanded, professional communications and marketing team.
UTC is part of the UT System and serves a diverse student body of nearly 11,500 undergraduate and graduate students. The four academic colleges and the Graduate School offer 47 baccalaureate degrees with 88 program concentrations; 22 graduate certificate programs; 22 master's programs with 52 program concentrations, an education specialist program with 4 program concentrations, and 6 doctoral degrees with 6 program concentrations. Two additional units are led by deans: the Honors College and Library. UTC has ten Chairs of Excellence, an array of endowed professorships and the UTC SimCenter for Computational Engineering, along with a companion PhD program. And the University’s Division-I (Southern Conference) athletic program has been expanded and strengthened measurably over the past several years, producing very positive results for student-athletes, the University and boosters alike.

The University is accountable for managing and enhancing its own brand identity and MarCom functions. The new VCOCM will work collaboratively across the University’s leadership group and with OCM staff to facilitate the fulfilment of UTC’s strategic vision and to develop the requisite marketing and communications programs to help each of the institution’s units produce desired outcomes. The new VCOCM will also be asked to conceptualize, plan, and develop a broader communications program, while also planning the requisite marketing activities to maintain and enhance UTC’s brand identity across constituencies.
The ideal candidate must possess a baccalaureate degree. The University has established the following attributes and competencies on which to evaluate and assess potential candidates:
- Executive presence and the ability to create a strong public impression, both individually and institutionally;
- Demonstrated experience developing and collaboratively leading a team of professionals, aligning their efforts with the University’s leadership and producing measurable impact;
- Strategic thinking and planning skills and the ability to build the team in the process of developing a new integrated plan;
- Ability to communicate strategically;
- Excellence in brand management;
- The ability to design and implement an effective media relations program and to enhance the University’s coverage within relevant markets and market segments;
- An understanding of and proficiency with social media and its relevance to students, alumni, donors and partners;
- Experience advising the University's senior leadership in regards to effective and strategic communication;
- An understanding of unit operations, including planning, finance and budgeting, personnel management and internal communications;
- A graduate degree in a relevant discipline is preferred, as is prior experience leading a MarCom team in the higher education space;
