The University of Georgia (UGA) invites nominations and applications for the position of Assistant Provost and Campus Director at UGA Griffin in Griffin, Georgia. This position is the senior most administrator at UGA Griffin and oversees all research and academic programs and works full time on the Griffin Campus. The position reports dually to the Office of the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost at UGA and the Dean and Director of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES) to support the Research, Academic, and Extension missions of the College. 

About UGA Griffin

The UGA Griffin Campus, located 40 miles south of Atlanta, was established as the Georgia Experiment Station in 1888. Since that time, UGA’s College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences has housed world-renowned Research and Extension programs at this Griffin location. In 2005, UGA Griffin launched a selection of academic programs to offer both undergraduate and graduate degrees. The campus now serves the mission of the University of Georgia through Teaching, Research, and Extension. Student enrollment at UGA Griffin is currently over 140 students with total staff and faculty of about 300. The growing Griffin campus currently has about 100 buildings comprising about 400,000 square feet and is located on about 1,000 acres. Approximately 100 graduate students also work and perform research in various Griffin laboratories.

Several undergraduate and graduate degrees at UGA Griffin are offered through four Colleges at UGA including the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, the College of Education, the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, and the Terry College of Business. These include, ten undergraduate majors for transfer students seeking degree completion plus full graduate programs in student affairs leadership, mathematics education and workforce education. Graduates from UGA Griffin join a network of more than 340,000 UGA alumni across the country and around the world.

UGA Griffin also has a robust research enterprise with an economic impact of $15 million in the general areas of agriculture, food and food processing, and food safety, among several others. Notable research centers at UGA Griffin include the Center for Food Safety, the Food Product Innovation & Commercialization Center, the Center for Urban Agriculture, and a Turfgrass Research & Education Facility.

Primary Responsibilities

  • As the senior most administrator at UGA Griffin, oversee all research, extension, and academic programs.
  • Support the day-to-day Research, Extension and Teaching programs at UGA Griffin in accordance with federal, state, and University guidelines and policies.
  • Manage the UGA Griffin campus infrastructure and infrastructure support.
  • Develop partnerships with other institutions to facilitate transfer of students to UGA Griffin.
  • In collaboration with the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, support and grow the Research and Extension Enterprise at UGA Griffin in the agricultural and environmental sciences, particularly in areas of emerging need.
  • Develop partnerships with various colleges at UGA, including the Graduate School, to expand new degree program offerings at UGA Griffin.
  • Coordinate UGA Griffin interaction and partnerships with community and business leaders, including but not limited to public safety officials, Archway Partnership, Chamber of Commerce and other business associations, economic development officials and programs, city and county planning officials and commissioners, local offices of tourism and trade, and media outlets.
  • Oversee the academic affairs unit and academic support-service areas, including instructional technology, classroom scheduling, academic event scheduling, purchasing and budgeting.
  • Make positive contributions to the academic programs at UGA Griffin, with research, teaching, mentoring or advising responsibilities.
  • Accept other assignments as delegated by the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost and/or Dean and Director of CAES.

Minimum Qualifications and Requirements

  • One or more degrees in the discipline of agricultural sciences and a doctorate level terminal degree such as a Ph.D., Ed.D., or J.D.
  • A record of excellence in teaching, student mentoring, scholarship/publications, and grant funding, to qualify for associate or full professor with tenure on appointment.   • To be eligible for tenure on appointment, candidates must have been tenured at a prior institution and bring a demonstrably national reputation to UGA.

Relevant Experience

  • Proven ability to manage an academic organization as demonstrated by a background that includes leadership experience as department head, program director, assistant dean or the equivalent.
  • A demonstrated track record of supporting and expanding high-quality research programs and interdisciplinary research.
  • A background in program administration, budget development, and human resources.
  • A demonstrated track record of supporting innovative learning and student success at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and/or Competencies

  • Strong leadership with sound budgetary skills.
  • Ability to interact effectively with the faculty, staff and students and community members and willingness to attend evening and weekend functions as required. 
  • A commitment to diversity and inclusive excellence.
  • Ability to communicate the mission and importance of the programs on the Griffin Campus to internal and external audiences.
  • Ability to work and collaborate effectively with the CAES dean’s office and the UGA provost office.
  • Ability to demonstrate a commitment to teaching, research, service and outreach.
  • A clear understanding and commitment to the mission of a land-grant university.
  • The highest degree of personal integrity and an ability to gain the confidence of the faculty and staff, both internal and external to the campus, through effective communications and transparent decision making.

The planned start date is tentatively January 1, 2022, but no later than July 1, 2022. Only applicants currently legally eligible to work in the United States will be considered.
