Mount Marty College, which will become Mount Marty University on July 1, 2020, invites applications for the Director of the Nurse Anesthesia Program. Mount Marty seeks a dynamic, forward thinking, and accomplished nurse anesthesia educator to continue to advance the Nurse Anesthesia Program.

The Position

Located in Sioux Falls, SD, the Nurse Anesthesia program is a 36-month doctoral program that accepts roughly 35 students each year. Recognized as one of the oldest Nurse Anesthesia programs in the country, the program traces its roots back to the diploma program at Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, SD, in 1942.

The Director of the Nurse Anesthesia Program will have oversight of the Doctor of Nurse Anesthesia curricular programming, supervision of faculty and staff, and assure compliance with regulatory bodies. In addition, the Director is expected to align the program with the core values, mission, and strategic plan of the larger University. The Director reports to the Dean of Nursing and Health Sciences and is a member of the University’s Graduate Council.

Preferred Qualifications

The Director must possess a terminal degree and be eligible to practice nurse anesthesia in South Dakota. In addition, it is preferred the Director possesses:

  • 5 years CRNA clinical experience
  • Clinical and/or didactic teaching experience
  • A record of relevant research and scholarship
  • Administrative and/or managerial experience in the clinical and/or educational environment
  • Interpersonal and human relations skills with the ability to relate to diverse groups
  • Strong management and organizational skills
  • Long term vision and goals in alignment with the institutions strategic plan
  • An ability to strengthen the program and support personal and professional growth of the students and faculty
  • An emphasis on the future of nurse anesthesia practice and accreditation standards
  • Willingness to generate reports as required to meet institutional and regulatory standards

The College

Mount Marty is a Catholic, Benedictine university founded in 1936 by the Benedictine Sisters of Yankton, South Dakota. Mount Marty is home to 45 full-time faculty and 7 part-time faculty. In addition, many adjuncts are part of the academic delivery. Of the full-time faculty, 84 percent (38) are tenured or on tenure track. The college-wide headcount is 1,051 (615 undergraduate, 182 graduate, 254 dual credit) and total student FTE is 835. Student-faculty ratio is 12:1 and the average class size is 16.

In keeping with the Benedictine tradition, the institution exists as a community of learners. Primary emphasis is placed on the development of each person as a complete human being with intellectual competence, professional and personal skills, and a composite of moral, spiritual, and social values. The mission of the institution is renewed year by year within the framework of Benedictine traditions, the teachings of the Catholic Church, the goals of American higher education, and the educational needs of all students.

The academic programs are housed in three separate locations in South Dakota: Yankton, Sioux Falls and Watertown. The main campus is in Yankton, adjacent to the Avera Sacred Heart Hospital which is part of the Avera Health system that serves more than 100 communities in five states. Avera Health, headquartered in Sioux Falls, is jointly sponsored by the Benedictine Sisters in Yankton and the Presentation Sisters in Aberdeen, SD.

The Sioux Falls location is home to Mount Marty’s nationally recognized doctoral program in Nurse Anesthesia. Sioux Falls, with a population of approximately 200,000, is one of the fastest growing cities in the Midwest. Its economy, based largely on health care and financial services, superb quality of life and outstanding schools, make it a great place to live. By car, Sioux Falls is about 3.5 hours southwest of Minneapolis/St. Paul and 2.5 hours north of Omaha. The Nurse Anesthesia program includes six full-time faculty members and an office manager.
