About Brown University Athletics and Recreation

In May of 2020, the University began the implementation of its “Excellence Initiative”, designed to further its vision for varsity athletics in advancing the ideal of scholar-athletes who embrace excellence in academics while competing on teams that are among the most competitive among university peers. In the spirit of a University that provides its students with educational opportunities both broad and deep, Brown is committed to sustaining one of the most wide-ranging NCAA Division I intercollegiate sports programs for men and women in the country, while also providing opportunities for participation in club sports and recreation activities that enhance the health and wellbeing of students, faculty and staff. The athletics program plays an essential role in teaching students to conduct themselves with honesty and integrity, make sacrifices, strive for excellence, persevere through adversity, and compete with dignity and pride while developing a commitment to teamwork and service to the community.

Position Summary

Reporting directly to the President, the Vice President of Athletics and Recreation provides leadership, strategic vision and direction to programs and services in athletic and recreational sports that support a campus-wide program consistent with the academic mission of the University. The Vice President is responsible for strategic planning, fiscal management, and oversight of personnel, facilities and operations. The Vice President supervises an NCAA Division I program consisting of 34 sports, assuring that all programs comply fully with institutional, Ivy League and NCAA guidelines; a club sports program of over 30 teams; and a fitness center and program that serves the entire Brown community.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Leadership, Strategic Vision and Collaboration

  • Demonstrate core competencies in the areas of leadership and vision, the development of a strategy to advance that vision, and the management and oversight of a complex organization that is operationally efficient and financially sound.
  • Establish a culture of excellence for student-athletes and coaches, providing them with the necessary resources, support and strategic oversight required to compete for Ivy Championships on a consistent basis. 
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues and units across the campus, including but not limited to Campus Life, University Health Services and the College, to ensure that Brown’s athletics and recreation program supports the full intellectual growth, social development, and health and wellbeing of all Brown students.
  • Report to members of the Brown University Corporation on the status of athletics and recreation at Brown, including competitiveness, the athletic and academic achievements of student-athletes, and support needed to advance strategic goals.
  • Participate as a member of the President’s Cabinet in the development and implementation of University-wide initiatives.
  • Ensure that the University’s longstanding commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion is reflected in the strategic vision and all aspects of the operations of the Department of Athletics and Recreation.
  • Collaborate and consult with students, staff and faculty to ensure that the athletic and recreation programs are meeting the needs of these campus constituencies and issues related to the support and development of students are being addressed.
  • Build connections between the Brown athletics and recreation program and the local Providence communities, with the goal of enhancing the University’s relationship with and support for our neighbors.

Integrity and Compliance

  • Collaborate with the Division of Campus Life and the Office of General Counsel to ensure that the Athletics Department and varsity athletes are compliant with Brown’s policies, procedures, and code of conduct and with state and federal laws and Title IX regulations.
  • Maintain a culture of compliance to ensure that Brown meets the guidelines and requirements of the Ivy League and the NCAA guidelines.
  • Keep abreast of regulatory changes and ensure compliance with requirements by reviewing all relevant documents and determining impact of changes on programs.
  • Maintain the highest standards of integrity in matters related to admissions, fundraising and the recruitment of student-athletes.

Operational and Fiscal Management

  • Manage the athletics, fitness and recreational sports programs that report to the Vice President and provide direction by setting goals, stimulating program development, allocating resources, assessing student and other institutional needs, developing appropriate policies, fostering open communication with and among campus constituencies, promoting relevant evaluation methodologies, and participating in decision making processes.
  • Demonstrate an ability to recruit, retain and develop talented coaches and other Athletics Department staff, and cultivate an environment of professional development and continuous improvement for staff.
  • Organize and monitor the recruitment efforts of the coaching staff to ensure enrollment of diverse and highly-qualified student-athletes. Develop short-term and long-term plans for recruitment efforts that maintain integrity and attend recruiting events.
  • Develop and sustain sound policies and practices for the admissions of varsity student-athletes, and collaborate with the Admission Office to ensure that Brown’s academic and athletic goals are achieved.
  • In concert with the President, the Division of Advancement and the Brown University Sports Foundation, develop fundraising goals and strategies to grow the Athletics Department’s endowment and Annual Fund and raise funds for needed capital projects, and work with alumni, parents and friends of the University to increase financial support for Brown’s athletic and recreation programs.
  • Develop priorities for construction and capital improvement projects for athletics and recreation, and participate in plans for the design and funding of these projects.
  • Develop plans to enhance the revenue-generating capacity of the Athletics Department through facilities rentals, marketing and other strategies.

Professional Development and External Leadership

  • Maintain professional development by participating in educational programs and professional organizations.
  • Build and maintain relationships with the Ivy League and the NCAA Division I, and participate actively in league and conference meetings and activities.


  • A bachelor’s degree is required; advanced degree strongly preferred.
  • The successful candidate will have a demonstrated record of administrative leadership and accomplishment, of progressively responsible collegiate athletic administrative experience.
  • Ten years of experience in university or college sports programs, which includes managerial or supervisory experience, is preferred.
  • Candidates should demonstrate significant experience in strategic and financial planning.
  • Possess a commitment to diversity and to the development of an inclusive campus culture.
