The University of South Alabama (USA) invites applications and nominations for the position of Executive Director of Governmental Relations.
Role and Responsibilities
The essential functions of the position include directing and coordinating all governmental relations activities—federal, state, and local—for the University and its hospitals and clinics; serving as principal advisor to the President and senior officers on University policy and relationships with all levels of government; establishing and cultivating relationships with governmental officials and policy makers on legislative, regulatory, and other activities to promote them best interests of the University and its health care system; providing leadership and direction for the University’s Office of Governmental Relations and coordination of the governmental relations activities of faculty, staff, administrators, and supporters; developing strategic plans to enhance the coordination and communication of the University’s position on issues relating to its teaching, research, health care, and academic medical center missions; organizing and directing the production of various Governmental Relations publications to keep the faculty, staff, and administrators apprised of government issues as they relate to the University and its health care system; using written and oral communication skills as an effective negotiator and consensus builder in the context of an academic community; developing and maintaining an extensive knowledge and understanding of issues pertaining to higher education, research, health care, and academic medical centers and their relationships to government; monitoring and analyzing state legislation and regulations with potential to affect USA; working collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to develop state level public policy and appropriations priorities for the university; engaging with state policy makers/influencers to advocate and deliver for the university; and, serving as key representative and ambassador for the university in Montgomery, throughout the state and in Washington DC. Responsibilities will also include travel, including international, and work on nights and weekends.
Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred; in an appropriate area and five years of experience in governmental relations or related field. Direct or specific experience at the federal level. Strong preference for individuals with related experience in the State of Alabama, and the federal level.
