About the School

Founded in 1945, first as a Department in the College of Liberal Arts and now as the School of Journalism in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, the Mayborn School enrolls 1,200 plus journalism undergraduate and graduate students.  The School is home to a legacy of excellence with notable alumni, including 14 Pulitzer Prize winners or finalists and the Frank W. Mayborn Graduate Institute of Journalism which houses the only nationally accredited professional master’s degree program in the state of Texas.  Students of the School receive access to internships in the fifth largest media market in the country, courses taught by national award-winning journalists and opportunities to gain hands-on experience in writing, advertising, broadcasting, photojournalism and digital media. 

About the Position

Reporting to the Executive Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, the Dean advances the teaching and research mission and is responsible for providing innovative, effective, dynamic and transformational leadership for the School.  The Dean will support the University’s commitment to inclusion, diversity, equity and access in all academic and personnel matters.  The Dean will adhere to and foster high standards of ethical conduct, compliance with all applicable laws and regulations, appropriate financial oversights and controls, as well as safety, security, and confidentiality related to the position. 

Related responsibilities include providing entrepreneurial leadership to enhance the School’s national and international impact, encouraging and rewarding faculty excellence in research, teaching and service, developing and maintaining strong connections with a broad network of alumni, industry and supporters of the School, and exploring innovative approaches to enhance student educational experiences.  UNT aspires to elevate the excellence of journalism, media arts and communications.  The University seeks a highly collaborative leader that can work across the University to foster interdisciplinary opportunities.  

It is preferred the ideal candidate will possess a Ph.D. in a relevant discipline of the School’s programs or appropriate professional experience and will have to meet the standards for appointment at full professor rank.  Additional preferred qualifications include:  

  • A record of successful senior leadership experience in the academy or industry;
  • A record of accomplishments that demonstrate academic excellence and intellectual distinction and an appreciation of the varied disciplines and functions that compose the rich academic tapestry of the School;
  • Ability to develop a bold vision for the future consistent with the University’s strategic plan to promote the continued academic excellence and innovation in both graduate and undergraduate education;
  • Experience with media-related industry and research such as newspapers, broadcast, online/multimedia, digital media, public relations, advertising and strategic communications;
  • A track record of successful fundraising with a talent for identifying, cultivating and leveraging industry partnerships;  
  • Demonstrated experience in developing, implementing and sustaining innovative programs that foster and value excellence in teaching, research, service and entrepreneurship;
  • A history of transparent and collaborative leadership practices; and the expertise to guide organizational development and to creatively address issues on the forefront of journalism;
  • Capacity to identify, recruit and retain strong leadership, faculty and staff within the School; 
  • Commitment to the diversity of students, faculty and staff and to advancing an inclusive climate that stimulates excellence;
  • Budget and personnel management experience necessary to administer the affairs of the School and interact effectively with other University administrative officers;
  • Ability to connect and integrate the School with important areas of teaching and research across the University; 
  • A demonstrated commitment to student success and retention.
