Position Summary

The Director of Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation has direct responsibility for the University’s NCAA Division I Intercollegiate Athletics program, all campus recreational programs (fitness/wellness, intramurals, club sports, recreational activities) and the Physical Education program.  The Director supervises a full and part-time staff of more than 100 people and manages an annual budget that exceeds $13M.  This is a critical leadership position at the university. He/She will report directly to the Vice President for Institutional Advancement and will have a close working partnership with the President.

The Director’s primary responsibility is to encourage and support the total development of students and student-athletes at UMBC through the competitive, recreational, and educational sports programs and activities sponsored by the University. 

The Director is expected to:

  • Provide bold, collaborative and innovative leadership required to make UMBC a national model for integrating athletics and the academy.
  • Understand and appreciate the culture of athletics and academics at UMBC, and endeavor to build relationships and networks that will further establish athletics as an integral part of campus life.
  • Demand student well-being and strong academic outcomes (including academic progression and graduation rates) for student athletes consistent with the values and academic integrity of the University.
  • Encourage diversity and inclusion within the Department with regard to students, staff, administrators and coaches.
  • Recruit, mentor, support, and supervise a diverse pool of ethical and talented coaches to foster success within the Department.
  • Represent the University and the Department to external constituents in a manner that demonstrates personal and professional integrity and promotes UMBC’s interests.
  • Work closely with the University’s administration to lead fundraising and revenue development for capital projects and athletic program support.
  • Practice accountability by establishing specific goals and expected outcomes.
  • Be a subject matter expert who possesses a strong grasp of national issues, and can demonstrate experience with best practices and innovative strategies that are critical to building a contemporary best-in-class, Division I athletics and recreational program.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • Direct all aspects of the Intercollegiate Athletics Program including the following:
    • Hire and evaluate coaching, program, and administrative staff;
    • Develop and implement initiatives that build healthy, dynamic athletic programs which can  compete for championships within the America East Conference;
    • Provide leadership in directing all elements of financial affairs for the Division of Athletics, Recreational Sports and Physical Education;
    • Partner with institutional stakeholders to plan, execute, and evaluate marketing and promotions campaigns to build the Retriever Athletics brand, increase attendance, and optimize revenue growth;
    • Partner with institutional stakeholders to plan, execute, and evaluate fundraising and alumni engagement activities to support divisional and institutional goals;
    • Plan, schedule, and manage facility use, maintenance, and development;
    • Oversee academic support program for student-athletes;
    • Inform university policy and practice relative to athletics, and represent the institution relative to those policies and practices with external stakeholders and groups, including the University System of Maryland, NCAA, and AEC, etc.;
    • Plan, resource, and execute athletic-related events and competitions;
    • Recognize and comply with the laws, policies, rules and regulations governing the University System of Maryland, UMBC, and its employees, as well as the rules of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the America East Conference (AEC) and those of any other conferences to which UMBC may become affiliated.
  • Direct the Recreation Program including the following:
    • Hire, support, and evaluate program and administrative staff who facilitate competitive intramural activities, clubs, fitness/wellness, and drop-in recreational programming;
    • Oversee the development, operations, maintenance, and planning of institutional recreational facilities;
    • Engage with campus stakeholders to leverage recreational programming in support of institutional health and wellness goals.
  • Direct the Physical Education Program including the following:
    • Hire, support, and evaluate staff who facilitate credit and non-credit physical education program;
    • Partner with academic stakeholders to develop and offer physical education programming that meets the needs of UMBC’s academic mission and institutional health and wellness goals;
    • Provide leadership over budget and facilities needs and requirements relative to Physical Education and Recreation.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience:

  • Seven years of progressively responsible leadership experience in athletics or a related profession, preferably in athletic administration at the Division I level.  The ideal candidate will have
    • Demonstrated ability to lead multi-unit teams of professionals in establishing and achieving ambitious goals
    • Experience hiring and leading coaches who field competitive teams and graduate athletes
    • Experience with effectively managing dynamic and complex budgets
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Advance graduate degree(s) preferred.
  • Evidence of visionary strategic and operational leadership, creative and conceptual thinking, and effective resources management.
  • Commitment to and understanding of fundraising best practices, and evidence of strong communication skills that are central to building relationships with internal and external constituents.
  • Evidence of a commitment to support the important and different roles among Intercollegiate Athletics, Recreation and Physical Education.
  • Commitment to building and maintaining strong connections between athletics and the academic enterprise to ensure success of UMBC student athletes and achieve both athletic and institutional goals.
  • Successful record of commitment to promoting diversity.
