About Davidson College

Davidson College combines a rigorous academic environment with experiential learning, whether in the community or overseas, that equips students to have disproportionate impact in a constantly changing world. The college’s historic campus is located in Davidson, North Carolina, north of Charlotte, providing a small town setting with access to a major metropolitan city.  Davidson consistently ranks among the nation’s top ten liberal arts colleges. Davidson seeks out intellectually curious students who are committed to developing their talents for lives of leadership and service. Small classes enable our renowned faculty to work closely with students, engaging them directly in original research and creative work across the arts, sciences, social sciences, and humanities. In the classroom and beyond, Davidson cultivates students' compassion, creativity, resilience, and moral courage. These values are nurtured in a community founded on trust as articulated by the Honor Code and on free, unfettered inquiry. The Davidson Trust supports the campus-wide commitments to access and equal opportunity.

The college is a member of NCAA Division I and the Atlantic 10 for all sports except for football (Pioneer Football League) and wrestling (Southern Conference). Nearly one-quarter of enrolled students compete in Division I athletics during their Davidson careers. As one of very few nationally prominent liberal arts colleges to combine play at the highest level with unrivaled academic opportunity, Davidson College is an exemplar of amateur athletic excellence. Davidson College has the ability to educate and graduate the nation’s most promising scholar athletes who want an exceptional educational and athletic experience and wish to flourish on campus and succeed in life beyond Davidson.

Statement of Purpose

The primary purpose of Davidson College is to assist students in developing humane instincts and disciplined and creative minds for lives of leadership and service. In fulfilling its purpose, Davidson has chosen to be a liberal arts college, to maintain itself as a residential community of scholars, to emphasize the teaching responsibility of all professors, and to ensure the opportunity for personal relationships between students and teachers. Further, Davidson believes it is vital that all students in every class know and study under mature and scholarly teachers who are able and eager to provide for each of them stimulation, instruction, and guidance.
