About the College

Founded in 1794, Bowdoin College is a highly selective liberal arts college, enrolling approximately 1,800 students. Through a need-blind admissions policy, the College meets 100% of students’ demonstrated financial need with no loans. 32% of students identify as students of color, an additional 5% are international, and 45% receive financial aid. As part of a comprehensive liberal arts education, the athletic department sponsors 31 varsity programs and competes at the Division III level in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC). Athletics at Bowdoin are an integral part of the College’s educational mission as slightly greater than one-third of all students on campus are varsity student-athletes.

The Position

The Head Football Coach is a 12-month position working in the Department of Athletics.  Joining a dedicated team of coaches, this position will strive to promote student success both on and off the field. The Head Coach of Football directs all aspects of the intercollegiate football team including coaching, recruiting, scheduling, program administration and budgeting. Additional responsibilities may include performing administrative duties as assigned at the discretion of the Director of Athletics.

This position is also responsible for the administration of all phases of the varsity program in accordance with guidelines from Bowdoin College, the NCAA, and NESCAC. The Head Football Coach serves as an active and visible campus presence, serving on committees, meeting recruits, and engaging with students outside of the Department of Athletics. The Head Football Coach will have significant night and weekend commitments. 

The Head Coach will oversee a program which practices and competes at historic Whittier Field.  An $8.5 million renovation of the Whittier Field and Hubbard Grandstand facility, which includes field turf, lights, an 8 lane track, new seating, a press box and a 9,000 square foot building with locker rooms, athletic training and equipment rooms will be completed in January 2019.

Requirements for the Position

  • A bachelor’s degree (Physical Education or related field) is required or a minimum of five years of coaching experience at the post-secondary level and/or professional competitive experience.
  • Knowledge of football skills and strategy and the ability to effectively teach them. 
  • Ability to motivate and effectively communicate with student-athletes.
  • Willingness and demonstrated ability to recruit qualified candidates to Bowdoin.
  • Commitment to being a positive member of the Athletics Department, while also being instrumental in fostering an inclusive community at the College and the ability to influence student-athletes to do the same.
  • Working knowledge of NCAA and NESCAC rules and an understanding of the philosophy of Division III athletics.
  • Administrative skills such as prioritization, organization, and budgeting.
  • Strong knowledge of current issues and best practices in higher education and intercollegiate athletics.
  • Ability to manage a large staff (seven) and work cooperatively across the campus community.
